Slow playing – a mistake or a strategy?

Have you ever heard of the terms slow playing? Well, if you’re not a newbie here, then you most certainly did. But, is it really that good to slow play your opponents? What do you have to know in order to do it right? Check this out if you want to improve your game strategy too!

It is often stated that slow playing is the opposite of bluffing. How come? Well, when bluffing you’re playing aggressively with a weak hand, making the others believe the opposite. When slow playing you’re actually betting passively, but with a strong hand. Why would you do it? Well, think about the fact that your opponents can either fold or instead play more chips that you could eventually win. Amazing, right? It usually depends on the situation and on how positive you are on your hand. But let’s get down to business and discuss some real opportunities you should consider.

Slow playing in poker – Key aspects

When it comes to slow playing you are obviously taking risks, and therefore picking the right moment is essential. But what if the others know you as being an aggressive player? Well, then slow playing might turn out to be a real challenge for you because your actions will be seriously doubted. Thus, a rule of thumb in poker – keep a low profile and change your strategy constantly. Don’t let the others guess what cards you hold.

  • Don’t slow play too much

From a burning desire to win and to deceive your opponents you might get tempted to slow play too much; at least if you’re a beginner, this is one of the most common mistakes. Don’t do it because it might just turn out into a huge game leak! Remember – when you have a strong hand, you actually have more chances to win if you play it right, so see the opportunities in front of you and win the pot.

  • Slow play only when you have a strong hand

In order to make sure you’re not going to leave lots of money on the table, you need a really strong hand before slow playing. Otherwise said, don’t fall into your own trap! Your best bet – for instance, you need a nut full house.

  • Slow play if you’re a passive player

If you usually adopt a passive gameplay, then slow playing might just be the ideal strategy for you. And the reason is obvious – no one will know that something is different, that you have great cards. It’s just the way you handle the game so surprise them!

  • No sudden changes

You need to maintain the same rhythm of play. Try to be consistent with your strategy and no one will notice the difference. Without a doubt, slow playing is difficult and you need experience and training to do it right!

Everyone loves the feeling of winning a large pot because your opponent didn’t see it coming, especially in poker. It’s like your strategy finally paid off. Don’t get too excited if you managed it once and try not to exaggerate. Stay unpredictable and take your opponents by surprise. This is how you can maximize your chances of success!

What’s your opinion on this topic? Do you believe you have more chances of winning by bluffing or slow playing? Would you recommend this strategy to newbies?
